What about California Proposition 65?

In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address their growing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative became the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known by its original name of Proposition 65. Proposition 65 requires the State to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. This list, which must be updated at least once a year, has grown to include approximately 800 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. By providing this information, Proposition 65 enables Californians to make informed decisions about protecting themselves from exposure to these chemicals. Proposition 65 also prohibits California businesses from knowingly discharging significant amounts of listed chemicals into sources of drinking water.

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) administers the Proposition 65 program. OEHHA, which is part of the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), also evaluates all currently available scientific information on substances considered for placement on the Proposition 65 list.

  • Trace amounts of lead, cadmium and other metals and chemicals listed under California’s Proposition 65 may be found in some of even the most carefully selected and sourced ingredients contained in our products. Lead, as an example, is a naturally occurring element that is found throughout the entire environment, including in soils where it can be taken up by natural plants and herbs all over the world. None of these elements are added by farmers or by Nutsite.com/Treasured Harvest/Western Mixers produce & Nuts, Inc. We follow excellent manufacturing practices throughout our supply chain to minimize or eliminate any contamination.

What does “dry in shell” (DIS) mean?

“Dry in shell” nuts start out the same as the wet in shell, but after drying naturally they are low-heat dried for 24 – 28 hours.  This process reduces the moisture content of the kernel, thereby shrinking it, allowing the kernel to separate from the shell.

What does “wet in shell” (WIS) mean?

“Wet in shell” means that the nuts are very fresh. The fresher the nut, the higher the moisture content of the kernel.

What is a Peanut?

Despite their name, peanuts belong to the legume family, along with peas, beans and lentils.

What is the best way to store nuts?

To keep nuts in the best condition, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer.  Return nuts to room temperature prior to serving or eating.

What types of chemicals are on the Proposition 65 list?

The list contains a wide range of naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals that are known to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. These chemicals include additives or ingredients in pesticides, common household products, food, drugs, dyes, or solvents. Listed chemicals may also be used in manufacturing and construction, or they may be byproducts of chemical processes, such as motor vehicle exhaust.

Which nuts are highest in monounsaturated fat?

The nuts that are highest in monounsaturated fat are: Almonds, Brazils, Filberts (Hazelnuts), Macadamias, Pecans, Pistachios and Walnuts.

Why are Cashew nuts only sold already shelled?

Cashew nuts are only sold, already shelled, because the inside of a cashew shell contains cashew balm, which is a caustic resin used to make insecticides and varnishes, and not for human consumption.

Why are some nuts referred to by size or count?

Some nuts are referred to by size or count. For example: 18-20 Pistachios, 21-25 Pistachios, 240 Cashews, 320 Cashews, etc… This refers to the number of nuts per ounce or per pound.  The higher the number, the smaller the nut.

Why do some recipes call for nuts to be heated prior to use?

Heating nuts prior to use releases aromas that increase the nut flavor. Briefly warming nuts in the oven before adding them to batters will also help prevent them from sinking to the bottom.  Be careful not to heat or toast for too long or it will cause the nuts to taste bitter or burnt.
